Initial Khemetic Explorations

Khemetic Solitary Ritual from the Per Sebek website.
Heqet page at Ancient Egypt Online.

I am interested in learning about Khemetic practices because of my interest in Hecate. I have learned that Hecate was originally the Egyptian frog-headed goddess Heqet, a goddess of fertility and resurrection, who also became associated with boundaries and crossroads, birth, and guiding people to the underworld when the Greeks and later the Romans adopted her. I have been working on a short story for a fantasy anthology, and I was mixing information from Egyptian and Greek myths simply because it worked well that way. Now, I know a little better what I'm doing, and I want to learn more.

Celtic Christian Protective Circle Casting

Caim Circle Ritual

This is simple and beautiful. Part of it reminds me of the St. Patrick's Breastplate prayer:

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this day to me for ever.
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom;*
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of the cherubim;
The sweet 'well done' in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord,
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the starlit heaven,
The glorious sun's life-giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea,
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility,
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart's idolatry,
Against the wizard's evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo

A collection of Links:

Apropos of nothing: Peter Kirk's Gentle Wisdom blog, which I read because, in one of its posts, he discusses whether bloodstains on the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Ovideo give DNA evidence of the virgin birth of Christ. I'm rather skeptical.

The Goddess Vesta

Cn. Lentulus pontifex Quiritibus sal.

During the 12 days of the Ludi Novi Romani, we commemorate about the 12 years of Nova Roma, and each day we honour one of the 12 Olympic Gods, the Di Consentes.

Yesterday was the traditional date on which the Vestals re-lighted the sacred fire of Goddess Vesta. Fire is the beginning of culture. Culture is fire, both literally and figuratively. Vesta re-lighted Her fire in us, Nova Romans, 12 years ago, and it is still burning and urging us to do something for the regeneration of the Roman life.

Today it is Dies Ater, but commemorating about Vesta and Her sacred light, we can make less dark this second day of March, the only dark day of the Ludi Novi Romani.

Pray to Vesta, may She brighten the public life of Nova Roma with Her blessings, blessings on our houses, families and on the fire in our hearts that moves us to live for Rome.

Visit and read, and if you can, expand this article:

An Excerpt from Thunder: Perfect Mind

(It's from a Gnostic text, which I think I will borrow for use in my novel, Archon.)

For I am knowledge and ignorance.
I am shame and boldness.
I am shameless; I am ashamed.
I am strength, and I am fear.
I am war and peace.
Give heed to me.
I am the one who is disgraced and the great one.
